Whether it’s carb counting to help you only enjoy your meal, or correction doses to save you at times when you forget your insulin boluses, the Medtronic 780g Insulin Pump is always there for you. Although recently approved by the FDA to be used with Simplera Sync, this sensor is not yet available, and a limited supply should be available by fall 2025 in the USA. Currently Guardian 4 sensor is being used with this insulin pump. This CGM sensor sends data every 5 minutes to the pump, according to which the pump can deliver insulin boluses; allowing you to achieve personalized blood sugar targets. This automatic insulin delivery (AID) system is waterproof and has been indicated for people aged 7 and above with type 1 diabetes.
It is not tested on people with type 2 diabetes. If you need a tubeless automatic insulin delivery system (AID system) for managing type 2 diabetes, try Omnipod 5. This AID system has been indicated for type 2 diabetics aged 18 and above, whereas in individuals living with type 1 diabetes, this is suitable for aged 2 and above.
Key Features of Medtronic 780G Insulin Pump
1. SmartGuard Feature
The 780G system comes with both ‘Manual’ and ‘SmartGuard’ mode. With built-in safety features designed to protect the user from hypo- and hyperglycemic events. The system continuously monitors blood glucose levels and automatically adjusts insulin delivery to maintain the user’s target range. If blood glucose levels move out of range, such as above 180 mg/dL or below 70 mg/dL, the pump will adjust insulin delivery to bring it back within range. Additionally, a high/low glucose alarm notifies users of critical levels. To use the pump in manual mode, SmartGuard needs to be turned off.
2. Meal Detection Technology
The 780G features advanced meal detection technology that can automatically determine if a meal has been consumed and adjust insulin delivery accordingly. This technology helps to optimise insulin delivery and reduce the likelihood of high or low blood sugar after meals.
3. User-Initiated Corrections (Fixed Target)
780G insulin pump users have the ability to make user-initiated corrections. The fixed target system enables users to set their desired target range, which the system strives to maintain, allowing for flexibility and control over their diabetes management.
4. Customizable Insulin Delivery
The system allows the user to customise their insulin delivery based on their needs, ensuring that their therapy is as personalized as possible. The automatic adjustments make the 780G suitable for those who require constant monitoring and adjustments for optimal insulin delivery.
5. Easy-to-Use Interface
The 780G insulin pump features an intuitive interface, making it user-friendly for people of all ages, including children. The system’s touchscreen display provides easy access to settings, insulin delivery data, and notifications, helping users maintain full control of their diabetes management.
According to the FDA, ‘this system should not be used by individuals who cannot understand pump signals and those who do not stay in contact with their doctors.’
