CGM stands for continuous glucose monitoring. CGM systems typically include a sensor and a pocket-sized reader. However, nowadays, the latest CGM sensors come with specific smartphone compatibility. These sensors are discreet enough that they remain unnoticeable if worn under clothes. Some of the latest CGMs are even the size of two quarters stacked together.
These CGM sensors usually have a micro pin with the help of which they are inserted either on the back of your upper arm, on the abdomen, or some sensors may also be inserted on the buttocks in kids. These micro pins detect your glucose data from interstitial blood and transmit with the help of a transmitter to your reader or a compatible smartphone. These continuous blood glucose readings, without fingerpricks, help you make more informed decisions.
Unlike blood glucose monitors (requiring manual finger pricks), the CGM systems automate your blood sugar monitoring, and the latest ones are even compatible with automated insulin delivery (AID) systems. There are CGM sensors indicated for type 1, type 2, and even gestational diabetes. While there are multiple CGM brands in the US, Dexcom and Abbott fall among the most trusted ones.

What is the MARD Value?
The FDA has set some benchmarks for the CGM systems, as per which a CGM with less than 10% MARD perhaps be considered to have a good accuracy. The term MARD stands for ‘mean average relative difference’. This percentage defines the average difference between the readings from the CGM device and a reference measurement, such as a blood glucose meter.
How Long Does a Sensor Last?
This varies between CGMs; having said that, most Freestyle Libre sensors last up to 14 or 15 days. In contrast, the Dexcom CGM sensors typically last up to 10 days or 10 days and a half. Since we are talking about the life span of CGM sensors, let’s not forget some important tips to keep sensors well adhered and intact:
- Before inserting a sensor, make sure you clean the area of insertion with a non-fragrant soap, use an alcohol swab, let the area dry, and then insert your sensor.
- Make sure you read the complete instructions before insertion.
- If you are a side sleeper, do not wear them on the side you usually sleep.
- Last but not least, many CGM users use CGM Patches to keep their sensors adhered and intact. You can use any other stickers as well if you feel like.
Some of the Latest CGM Systems:
There are multiple models of Dexcom and Freestyle Libre CGM sensors, however, we have discussed the latest marks which is Dexcom G7 and the Libre 2 Plus. Both of these sensors are AID compatible and can be ordered using your debit/credit card or insurance from CGM Monitors – your trusted diabetic supplier.
