Continuous glucose monitoring devices commonly known as CGMs are becoming famous due to the ease they provide. Just to give a quick recap, CGM devices are used to monitor your glucose levels 24/7 without the need to prick your finger each time you want to check your sugar levels. A small sensor is inserted into your skin which sends glucose readings to your reader, which can either be the receiver or your smartphone as well.
Latest in CGM market:
Abbot has recently introduced a new CGM device which is Freestyle Libre 3 Plus Sensor. A CGM device that not only removes the need to prick your fingers but also provides you with a dazzling 15-day (up to) life span.
Testing & Approval:
Freestyle Libre 3 Plus has not only met but surpassed FDA’s standards. It has gone through many clinical tests and now can be safely used for treatment purposes.
Size:
The size of this sensor is just going to be the same as that of Libre 3, which means still the world’s smallest CGM sensor. If you don’t recall the size of Libre 3, it’s two pennies stacked together.
Accuracy:
The accuracy of Freestyle Libre 3 Plus is however a bit less than Freestyle Libre 3. The MARD values show the accuracy of CGM devices. If we look at the MARD value of Freestyle Libre 3, it was 7.9%. Whereas the MARD value of Libre 3 Plus is 8.2%.
The lower the MARD value, the greater the accuracy.
How long will it last:
With good accuracy and every-minute readings, the Freestyle Libre 3 Plus will last up to 15 days. Giving you the advantage of saving time and money together.
Who can use it?
Abbott has achieved a good milestone here. The Freestyle Libre 3 Plus Sensor can be used by kids aged 2 and above. Libre 3 could be used by kids aged 4 and above.
Proven Results:
The Freestyle Libre 3 Plus has shown a 1.6% decrease in A1C in patients. A1C is a test that measures the average glucose levels of the past 3 months.
Conclusion:
The new Freestyle Libre 3 Plus is an excellent addition to the CGM world. It has almost the same accuracy as Libre 3 and can be used by kids aged 2 and above and will last up to 15 days unlike Libre 3 which used to last for about 14 days. It may also work with automatic insulin pumps, however, this information has not been confirmed yet by Abbott.
