Understanding CGM technology

Before we delve into the specifics of the Abbot Freestyle Libre 3, let’s briefly understand what Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) all is about. CGM technology is designed to monitor glucose levels in real-time throughout the day and night.

What sets Abbot Freestyle Libre 3 apart?

Minimally invasive design

One of the standout features of the Abbot Freestyle Libre 3 is its minimally invasive design. The system consists of a small sensor, approximately the size of a coin, that is inserted just under the skin’s surface. This design eliminates the need for traditional finger pricking, making it more comfortable and less intrusive for users.

Extended wear duration

The Freestyle Libre 3 boasts an extended wear duration of up to 14 days. This extended wear capability means fewer sensor changes, offering convenience and ease of use to individuals managing their diabetes.

Moreover, it reduces the overall cost of ownership compared to other CGM systems with shorter wear durations.

Real-Time glucose monitoring

The Freestyle Libre 3 continuously measures glucose levels and provides real-time data on demand. Users can simply scan the sensor with a compatible device, such as a smartphone or glucose reader, to instantly view their current glucose levels, historical trends, and patterns. This immediate access to data empowers users to make timely adjustments to their diabetes management.

User-Friendly mobile app

Abbot provides a user-friendly mobile app that syncs with the Freestyle Libre 3 sensor. The app offers various features, including customizable alerts for high or low glucose levels, data sharing options with healthcare professionals or caregivers, and trend analysis tools.

The intuitive interface makes it easy for both tech-savvy and non-tech-savvy individuals to navigate and utilize effectively.

Comparing Abbot Freestyle Libre 3 with other CGM systems

Now, let’s compare the Abbot Freestyle Libre 3 with other leading CGM systems to understand how it stands out in the market.

Accuracy & precision

The Freestyle Libre 3 is known for its high accuracy in glucose measurements. Its advanced sensor technology provides reliable readings, which is crucial for diabetes management decisions. While other CGM systems may also offer accuracy, the Freestyle Libre 3 has demonstrated consistent performance, making it a top choice for many users.

Cost-Effectiveness

When considering CGM systems, the cost is an important factor to take into account. The Freestyle Libre 3’s extended wear duration of up to 14 days contributes to cost-effectiveness in the long run, as fewer sensors are needed over time. This can be particularly advantageous for individuals with limited health insurance coverage for CGM supplies.

Ease of use

In terms of ease of use, the Freestyle Libre 3’s scanning mechanism simplifies glucose monitoring. Unlike some CGM systems that require complex insertion procedures, the Freestyle Libre 3’s application is straightforward, making it accessible to a broader range of users.

Continuous data availability

The real-time glucose data provided by the Freestyle Libre 3 is invaluable for users who require constant monitoring. Other CGM systems may have data delays or limitations on data availability, which could be a significant drawback for individuals who depend on up-to-date information for their diabetes management.

Abbott Freestyle Libre 3 reviews of customers

Freestyle Libre 3 has earned good popularity in the CGM market because it comes with top-notch features. Due to their remarkable characteristics, you see a lot of positive Abbott Freestyle Libre 3 reviews of customers. The users of this device are highly satisfied with its performance and find it helpful in managing their diabetes.

Does Freestyle Libre 3 have a reader?

The Freestyle Libre 3 is a compact device equipped with a glucose sensor that enables users to conveniently monitor their blood glucose levels and trends. While it is commonly used with smartphones for displaying readings, there is also a Freestyle Libre 3 reader available in the United States. The main objective of this device is to provide users with an improved way of viewing their glucose data, and it is designed to be comfortable to carry around.

However, as of now, the Freestyle Libre 3 reader is not available in the US market. This is the reason; it is not covered by Medicare. Medicare currently only covers continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) that include a reader. Abbott, the manufacturer of Freestyle Libre 3, is actively working towards making the reader available and seeking Medicare coverage for it. The launch of the reader in the US is expected in the near future due to these efforts from Abbott.

  1. Yes I currently get the freestyle Libre 3 with my insurance at the cost of 76. Dollers per 1 months prescription. I’ve had almost every one but 3 either come off early or stop working before the 14 day mark, yea I have reached out and received 3 new ones at different times, but how on earthed can you charge so much for something so faulty-and unreliable when it comes to wear? There’s got to be a better solution then covering them or sending new ones.

    1. Hi Leesa. We understand how it may feel. In order to resolve the falling off problem, you may try using CGM patches. As far as other issues are concerned,
please submit your feedback to Abbott and they shall appreciate it.

  2. I am calling FOUL!!
I have been using Free Style products for three years, starting with the Libre-2. But the Veterans Administration just recently switched to the Libre-3 Plus, which I have been using for eight months now.
But aside from the obvious benefits; i.e. 15 days of use as opposed to the 14 days from the Libre-2, to Longer range of 30’, I am experiencing 90% more failures from the 3 Plus than I ever did from the Libre-2.

However, even with proper site preparation before applying the Libre-3 Plus, I have experienced an average 40% failure of the sensors applied, due to what I believe is attributed to the adhesive failing prematurely, and the sensor falling off!

Although Abbot has replaced every sensor, documenting the failures, which I truly appreciate, I continue to have issues with the sensor falling off prematurely, after and average of 9-12 days of use from the past five (5) sensors applied alone!

I believe it is directly related to the adhesive, but don’t think Abbot is in agreement or addressed this issue as of yet.

    Great product, just needs fixing!

    1. We truly appreciate your super honest feedback. Till the issue is fully resolved, you may find it useful to try any of your preferred overlay patches.

      We hope that helps!
